April 2026: Universities, Research, and Academia

Main Speaker: Tomás Arias, Ph. D.

Skills Development Activity: Marshmallow Bridge

  • Each team is provided with the following items: marshmallows (1 bag of 40), toothpicks (75), paper, and pencils. Ideally, each team will have four students.

  • Two students on a team are “Builders” and two students are “Designers”. The Builders must build the bridge successfully, but it must be done according to the design of the Designers. The Designers must design the bridge, but are not allowed to touch any marshmallows or see the bridge that the Builders are building.

  • All of the information about the Builders’ bridge and the Designers’ design must be communicated orally to the other half of the team.

Character Talk: Magnanimity

  • Magnanimity is the virtue by which man pursues what is great and honorable in his life, even if it is difficult.

  • Magnanimity means “greatness of soul” in Latin.

  • The best approach to learning about this virtue is to study the actions of great men and women throughout history.
