< February: Staying Focused

MARCH: effective studying

Main Points of Class

  • Study is your first professional work, not just a preparation for work.

  • The primary goal of studying is to learn. In addition, a critical skill you learn by studying is training the mind to concentrate on the work at hand – a fundamental characteristic of a good professional. It is made possible by studying “at the right time” and “in the right place.”

  • In professional life, people measure you by your performance. In school, you are measured, in great part, by your grades.

  • You need to develop good study habits now.

  • Learning is not just for school. It’s for your whole life. Get used to it. Get good at it.

In-class activity: Dressing Well for Others, Part 2

  • Refinement should not make us stand out. We draw attention to ourselves either when we dress “too well” or too poorly.

  • The purpose of dressing well is to give the best of ourselves to the people around us by raising the tone and making life more pleasant for them.

  • Following objective principles in how we dress ensures that we will make life more pleasant for those around us.

Out-of-class work

  • Do QEC in at least one class and bring your notes to the next mentoring session.

  • Discuss the Study Habits for Success sheet with dad.

  • If you get your report card, bring it to the next mentoring session.

Mentoring

  • Discuss the study habits you currently have.

  • Review your current weekly schedule. How much time do you dedicate to studying?

  • Complete a Monthly Goals Sheet.
